There are a few rules that have to be stated before we look at how to use a cock ring. This is one of the few times in or out of sex that we have a good reason to restrict blood flow and that should always be done carefully.
It is very true that during sex is probably the worst time to tell anyone to be careful. The sensations of sex are overwhelming and wonderful and truly the ultimate distraction. Little things like a penis strangling in a too tight ring or chafing from an unlubricated vibrator are likely to go unnoticed until it is too late. If these don’t seem like little things now, rest assured it is amazing how little you notice these things in the heat of the moment, especially when trying something new. So let’s go over a few things now so that everything goes smoothly later.
The most important rule is: Never wear a cock ring for more than twenty minutes, ever! Even if you think it is loose enough that it won’t cut off blood flow it only takes a little twisting to change that and make it a dick tourniquet. You don’t have to remove it completely for the session but definitely remove it for a few minutes and reposition it. Because of the distractions you cannot trust your feelings about this, set a timer, look at a clock, do something to make sure you stay aware of the timing.
Also extremely important is to use a stretchy or adjustable ring when you are first starting out. Cockrings are made of many many materials but metal and hard rubber or plastic are only for advanced users who know themselves and ring use very well. For the rest of us, using something with some give to it will save us from a potentially painful error in size judgment. If you are buying in a store make sure it really is stretchy, there are too many packages out there that say super stretchy and contain things that are only stretchy if you are comparing them to rocks. There are adjustable ones you can use too but they are hit or miss on actual usability. Try to find one that won’t come off in use but can also be released easily.
Use lubricant! This is one place where natural bodily fluids are not going to be enough. For one thing they don’t last long enough and for another they get really sticky as they dry. Most cock rings are made out of stretchy plastics or rubbers and they are very high friction, almost sticky to the touch. Trying to put them on without any lubricant can be uncomfortable and trying to adjust them in place will be impossible. A vibrating ring is even worse because that is some seriously high speed chafing in a truly terrible area. Please just use lube, it’s way easier.
Do not roll a ring onto the penis or roll it into place if you don’t shave the area completely. Those high friction plastics that are used to make rings catch hair like you would not believe and having your pubes pulled that way hurts!
The last one seems obvious but isn’t always, don’t use a ring that feels uncomfortable when you put it on. Some of these techniques do require a tight ring but it should not be uncomfortable when you first put it on even for those methods. We are looking to slow down blood flow, not cut it off completely. If the ring is too tight when it first goes on, take it off and get a different ring.
There are many other things to learn about the wide world of cock rings but these are the very basics needed to try them out. Rings are a popular type of toy, and not just for folks who need a bit of erection help. Following these basics should keep your activities fun and safe.
Next I’m going to get into the specifics of using a ring to help with premature ejaculation. So if that’s what you’re here for, stick with me. If you are more curious about premature deflation, skip to the section after that.
